About Me

J-McGowan-09.jpg

I grew up in California and completed my studies at UC Irvine, UCLA, and the University of Oxford, where I earned my doctoral degree. My path then took me to Washington, DC, where I conducted research at the National Institutes of Health, and later to Boston, where I trained in psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital and McLean Hospital and joined the faculty at Harvard Medical School. I remained on the faculty at McLean for two years before moving into private practice.

My formal training has given me a deep appreciation for the rigor of Western medicine and science. At the same time, my own life and healing journey have led me well beyond the boundaries of conventional psychiatry—to explore contemplative practices, depth psychology, psychedelics, somatic therapies, energy work, and mystical and spiritual traditions.

These experiences have shaped how I understand suffering, healing, and the possibilities of human consciousness. They have also led me to become increasingly interested in the places where medicine and mysticism meet: what each can teach us about ourselves, what happens when we hold them in conversation, and how these perspectives might translate into meaningful change in everyday life.

I see healing not as something that is done to us, but as an unfolding that takes place within us—supported by relationship, guided by curiosity and discernment, and rooted in each person’s innate capacity for growth, insight, and transformation.

Treatment Philosophy

I believe healing is a relational and transformational process. Psychiatry can offer important tools—including medication when appropriate—but I do not see healing as something that is done to a person. Meaningful change comes through developing a deeper relationship with oneself, with others, and with life itself.

My early training was grounded in classical psychotherapy and the scientific foundations of psychiatry. Over time, my work has expanded to incorporate depth psychology, contemplative traditions, somatic approaches, and modern understandings of trauma. My own experience with psychedelics and other approaches to inner exploration has also shaped how I understand healing and transformation.

I believe psychological and spiritual dimensions of human experience can be explored without sacrificing scientific rigor or discernment. For some people, questions of meaning, consciousness, purpose, and spirituality are essential to understanding their suffering and their path forward. I meet people where they are, drawing from these different perspectives according to the individual rather than following a single therapeutic model. Medication can be an important support when appropriate, but it is one tool among many in the larger process of healing.

At the heart of my work is the therapeutic relationship: an authentic, attuned space where a person can safely explore their inner world, integrate their history, and reconnect with their own experience. My role is not to tell someone who they are or who they should become, but to help create the conditions in which their own clarity, agency, and capacity for change can emerge.

Ultimately, the aim is greater freedom—to live with more clarity, vitality, connection, creativity, and self-trust, while becoming more fully oneself.
